This will be an interactive workshop which will include discussion, case studies and activities focusing on your work with sexual and gender minorities. Working in groups and pairs, it will be an opportunity to share and build good practice, as well as an opportunity to ask questions and explore issues to increase your confidence working with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) clients.

The workshop will cover:
Terminology – getting confident with ‘LGBT’
Prejudice, privilege and homophobia – how things have changed and how they haven’t
Heteronormativity – what is it and why does it matter?
The legal context for LGBT rights and the 2010 Equality Act
Value and beliefs; individual responsibility
Good practice and creating ‘safe spaces’ for LGBT clients

Workshop leader Jess MacIntyre, PACE’s Professional Trainer, set up a charity in 2012 to work with individuals who seek asylum on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity. Through this, she began giving training to refugee charities, legal centres, NHS trusts and social services. As PACE’s Trainer, Jess now works with practitioners across the mental health sector, focusing mainly on relationships and family support specialists. She also teaches a module on postgraduate courses at the Relate Institute and Birkbeck University, London. Jess has a Master’s Degree in Human Rights.
