Professional Development

The Importance of Continuing Professional Development

In psychoanalytic psychotherapy there has always been a tradition of consultation with experienced colleagues. Nowadays, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a formal requirement for psychoanalytic psychotherapists. CPD involves keeping up to date with current scientific and clinical developments and ensuring that clinical sensitivity and objectivity are maintained.

The practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a private activity and so clinical discussions with colleagues, as well as study, are an essential aspect of CPD.

Professional Development in the ICC

The ICC offers three study mornings a year to its members. These take place on Saturday mornings in the hall of St Botolph Without Bishopgate, one of the churches in the City of London. Many are BPC/UKCP-accredited for CPD purposes and some are open events.

These events are intended both to further our knowledge of our own psychoanalytic way of working and to promote understanding of other psychotherapeutic methods by considering areas of divergence and confluence between psychoanalytic and other approaches.
